People in Ireland are heading to the polls today to vote in a referendum on legalising same-sex marriage.

Voting began at 7am and will continue until 10pm tonight, with the result expected to be declared on Saturday afternoon.

Those casting their votes will be asked if they agree with the statement: “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex”.
